100 people killed in China typhoon
More than 100 people have been killed as the strongest typhoon in half a century hit eastern China.
Typhoon Saomai tore into Cangnan county in the eastern province of Zhejiang yesterday after authorities moved more than one million people in the densely populated commercial province to safety.
By Friday noon, 104 people were confirmed dead and 190 were missing in Zhejiang and neighbouring Fujian province, according to the Chinese Xinhua news agency. Some 54,000 houses were destroyed.
Damage to crops, power lines and infrastructure was evident in Cangnan county. Power was also cut in five towns close to where Saomai made landfall.
